Valencia’s Albufera: complete guide to the city’s natural treasure

No trip to Valencia is complete without visiting the Albufera. This stunning natural park offers the perfect opportunity to discover Valencia’s history, nature and traditions in one of the region’s most iconic landscapes.

At Museo Iluziona, we have prepared this guide to help you learn about its history, how to get there and the best activities to enjoy during your visit.

The history of the Albufera

The Albufera was not always the lagoon we know today. Between 5,000 and 6,000 years ago, this area was a large bay connected directly to the Mediterranean Sea.

Over time, sediments carried by the Turia and Júcar rivers, together with marine currents, created a sandy barrier that gradually separated the bay from the sea, forming today’s lagoon.

In 1986, the Albufera was declared a Natural Park to protect its valuable ecosystem and extraordinary biodiversity. Today it is one of Spain’s most important wetlands.

Interesting facts about the Albufera

  • Its name has Arabic origins. The word al-buhayra means “the little sea”, referring to the lagoon’s former connection with the Mediterranean.
  • It is considered the birthplace of Valencian paella. The surrounding rice fields inspired the traditional recipe prepared with rice, rabbit, chicken and fresh vegetables.
  • It is a paradise for birdwatchers. Hundreds of bird species use the Albufera during their migratory routes between Europe and Africa.
