No trip to Valencia is complete without visiting the Albufera. This stunning natural park offers the perfect opportunity to discover Valencia’s history, nature and traditions in one of the region’s most iconic landscapes.
At Museo Iluziona, we have prepared this guide to help you learn about its history, how to get there and the best activities to enjoy during your visit.
The Albufera was not always the lagoon we know today. Between 5,000 and 6,000 years ago, this area was a large bay connected directly to the Mediterranean Sea.
Over time, sediments carried by the Turia and Júcar rivers, together with marine currents, created a sandy barrier that gradually separated the bay from the sea, forming today’s lagoon.
In 1986, the Albufera was declared a Natural Park to protect its valuable ecosystem and extraordinary biodiversity. Today it is one of Spain’s most important wetlands.
The Albufera is located just 10 kilometres from Valencia city centre, making it a very easy day trip.
Drive along the CV-500 towards El Saler or El Palmar. The journey takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes.
EMT bus routes 24 and 25 connect Valencia city centre with El Saler, El Palmar and other areas of the Natural Park in around 40 to 50 minutes.
A dedicated cycle path connects Valencia with the Albufera, passing through the southern beaches and the Devesa forest.
Whether you are looking for a relaxing getaway or an outdoor adventure, the Albufera offers activities for every type of visitor.
After exploring the Albufera, continue discovering Valencia’s culture at Museo Iluziona.
