Grandparents’ Day: a chance to thank them for their love

Everyone knows Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, and most people would never forget to celebrate them. However, Grandparents’ Day is often overlooked, even though few people deserve recognition more than grandparents. They have always been there to listen, care for us and support us.

That is why Museo Iluziona has prepared this guide to help you celebrate this special day and give back some of the love and care they have shared throughout our lives.

When is Grandparents’ Day?

Grandparents’ Day is celebrated around the world, although the date varies depending on the country.

In Spain and many Latin American countries, Grandparents’ Day is celebrated on July 26. It is the perfect occasion to organise a special plan and spend quality time together.

Many countries have created their own way of honouring grandparents:

  • Italy: Festa dei Nonni, celebrated on October 2.
  • Poland: January 21 for grandmothers and January 22 for grandfathers.
  • United Kingdom: first Sunday of October.
  • Canada: second Sunday of September.
  • Chile: October 15.

The date may change, but the purpose remains the same: recognising their love, dedication and lifelong support.

Why do we celebrate Grandparents’ Day?

The celebration was created to highlight the important role grandparents play within families and society.

In Spain, it has been officially celebrated since 1998, when the NGO Mensajeros de la Paz promoted the idea of dedicating a special day to grandparents.

The date of July 26 coincides with the feast of Saint Anne and Saint Joachim, traditionally considered the parents of the Virgin Mary and therefore the grandparents of Jesus.

Beyond its religious origins, the day serves as an opportunity to recognise the values, wisdom and affection that grandparents pass on through generations.

Surprise your grandparents with an experience

When thinking about gifts for Grandparents’ Day, many people focus on material presents. However, the best gifts are often shared experiences.

What grandparents usually appreciate most is spending quality time with their loved ones and creating new family memories.

That is why a shared activity can become the perfect gift.
